His maturity and wisdom throughout his albums does nothing but increase which I believe to be him coming to peace through reflection like the Transcendental Meditation line in Faces, or the first lines in Good News, or in I Can See the line "You got so far to go, but look at where you came from.

This extra gained knowledge (usually portrayed by nerdy types with glasses too) is something that, I think at least, Mac really started to reflect on.

When you look back at your life and see everything that's happened, you have a better grasp on how things happened, and more importantly how to handle them. I think it's a little subtle nod to that phrase and is a highlight of the second half of the album, which even ties into the Circles theme of his later works. Perhaps the minor appearance of glasses on the back is indicative of better vision on the back end (Hindsight is 20/20).
Specifically in Perfect Circle / God Speed, we see a large shift from a braggadocios tone into this very raw and emotional "I've fucked up a lot but Jesus Christ it's time for me to wake up" kind of vibe. If it was an error, then so be it, but I think that Mac wouldn't let a little something like that slip ya know? GO:OD AM's message was very introspective and reflective.
